OVWRC Staff Continue to Work with Local Business Community to Increase Diversion of Waste from Landfill
Increasing recycling and composting is what the Ottawa Valley Waste Management Board is aiming for after approving the 2011 Tipping Fee Schedule at a recent meeting. The new tipping fee schedule, effective January 1st of next year, will see the Mixed Waste Tipping Fee increase to $150 per tonne. The Mixed Waste Fee is applied to loads of garbage going to the landfill that contain recyclable, compostable, or construction/demolition material, hazard or electronic waste (as accepted by OVWRC) and/or tires. Implementation in 2008, the Mixed Waste Fee has already proven to be a success. In the last year alone, commercial recycling has increased by over 13% and the number of loads being charges the mixed Waste Fee has decreased by 36%.
The Mixed Waste Fee, which is almost double that of the regular landfill tipping fee, will encourage further separation of recyclables and other materials from waste. It’s relatively easy for OVWRC customers to avoid being charge the higher Mixed Waste Fee. They need to make sure they are recycling and/or composting any material that could be kept out of the landfill. Businesses are encouraged to contact their current waste hauler to inquire about what recycling and/or food waste collection services they offer. OVWRC staff is also available to provide businesses with guidance and staff training related to their recycling or composting programs. Information on commercial waste diversion programs is available on the Centre’s website at www.ovwrc.com or by contacting Elizabeth graham, Communications Supervisor at 613-735-7537, ext 216.
City of Pembroke SnoSpree – February 3 – 6, 2011
The City of Pembroke’s SnoSpree is just around the corner! This year’s winter celebration will be held on February 3 – 6, 2011.
While the Recreation Department continues to focus exclusively on children, they expect that there are many other events being planned for that same weekend. If you are planning a special event on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, they would like to help you advertise it. By tagging it as a SnoSpree Special Event, you will be able to be part of their multimedia advertising campaign that will include web & print. As they attempt to grow SnoSpree into a community celebration, your organization will benefit from the added exposure, for which there is no charge.
Contact Jordan Durocher, Program Assistant 613-735-6821 ext 1502 jdurocher@pembroke.ca for the registration form. Once you send it back they will forward you a copy of the SnoSpree logo to attach to any promotion that you may also be doing yourselves. Deadline for them to receive your information back is January 10, 2011.
