Watch for Possible Credit Card Processor Scams
It has come to our attention that there are possible scams out there targeting businesses with credit card machines.
1)   Pay attention to calls from persons saying they are calling from the Canadian Merchants Association and telling you that you qualify for a new upgraded credit card machine. They will ask you to fax you a copy of your current statement (blacking out merchant number and balance). If you are under the TD Merchant Services Program it they would contact you directly through your account rep and not through the Canadian Merchant Associates. Never fax your statement to any one and always question who they are.
2) Person mis-Representing Moneris (received info from North Grenville Chamber of Commerce). Someone is going around saying they are from Moneris and is there because the government passed a transparency act for payment processors and that requires them to send a rep out to explain your system every year and upgrade it if necessary. The person spoke French with very little English and is using the language barrier to get around. Always question and watch for documents that don’t quite look right.
No matter which credit card processor you use always contact them to verify these types of inquires and to report suspicious activities. Also let the Chamber office know so we can alert others as well.
