Upper Ottawa Valley Chamber of Commerce Hands Out 2010 Business Awards
The Upper Ottawa Valley Chamber of Commerce held the 7th annual Business Achievement Awards Gala on Saturday January 29th at the Germania Hall. It was a sell-out crowd that watched the awards being handed out to some very deserving businesses and individuals.
Chamber President Gary Melnyk said, “We are elated with the turnout who came to celebrate business excellence in the Upper Ottawa Valley. The Chamber is truly appreciative of all our sponsors, businesses that who donated items to our silent auction and the many volunteers who help put the event together.”
There were eleven awards handed out that evening starting with Young Entrepreneur of the Year which was awarded to Sheldon Keefe, Pembroke Lumber Kings’ owner, general manager and head coach. New Business of the Year was awarded to Barley’s Bakery. Saffco Electrical Plumbing and Heating was given the Small Business of the Year award for 2010. Medium Business of the Year was awarded to M & R Feeds and Farm Supply and the Large Business of the Year was Giant Tiger Pembroke.
Farm Enterprise of the Year was awarded to Hugli’s Blueberry Ranch. Named Community Organization of the Year was Communities in Bloom - Pembroke Committee. Receiving the 2010 Feature Award – Community Contribution by a Business was Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre.
The 2010 Citizen of the Year which is always one of the most difficult for the judges to decide on was awarded to Warden Bob Sweet, Mayor of Petawawa. Chamber Member of the Year which was selected by 2010 President Marie Mask, Past President Gail Richardson and Executive Director Lorraine MacKenzie was given to Shawn Behnke. The last award presented was the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award to Mr. Del O’Brien which was announced last December at the Chamber’s Annual General Meeting. It was presented by Dave Darch on behalf of the Expo 150 Committee who was the Platinum Sponsor for the event.
The evening also featured special music by 2010 CCMA Fiddle Player of the Year nominee Ben Rutz and a video on Expo 150 which will be held June 9 -12, 2011 and a silent auction. Dinner was prepared and served by Ullrich’s on Main. Emcees for the evening were, Tracy McBride, Star 96 and Shawn Behnke, ComBEtek Multimedia. TVCogeco taped the awards presentations which will be broadcast on local Community Channel 12 on Monday January 31, 2011 at 7:00 pm and again on Friday February 4th at 7:00 pm.
