Chamber of Commerce Names Finalists for Achievement Awards
The Upper Ottawa Valley Chamber of Commerce has announced the finalists for its upcoming Achievement Awards Gala. The 27 finalists were chosen by an independent selection committee, which reviewed more than 50 submissions that were received for the nine awards that were open to public nominations.
The award recipients will be announced at the Chamber Awards Gala on Saturday, January 16th at the Germania Hall, Pembroke. 2009 Chamber President, Gail Richardson, says the gala will be a terrific event. “We received some excellent nominations which, speaks volumes to the quality of businesses and community leaders we have in the UpperOttawaValley. Those who have been selected as finalists should be very proud and we all are very excited to see who the award recipients will be at this year’s gala,” adds Richardson.
The three finalists in the New Business category are The Nook Creperie Inc, Forward Thinking and The Pine Shop. Finalists for Citizen of the Year who are all well deserving of this honour are, Glenna Mackenzie, Stan Halliday and Anne Bromley. This is always a very hard category in which to choose a recipient.
Small Business of the Year finalists are Morris Thuemen Architects, Speedpro Signs and Jamieson Travel & Tours. While Medium Business of the year finalists are, Dreams Catering Ltd., Ullrich’s on Main and 104.9 myFM Radio. The Farm Enterprise of the year finalists are Connaught Nursery, Spruce Briar Jerseys and Gouldhaven Farms. CommunityLivingUpperOttawaValley, Cobden Agricultural Society – 150th Cobden Fair and Renfrew County Community Futures Development Corporation are the finalists in the Community Organization of the year category and the Best Western Pembroke Inn and Conference Centre, Ben Hokum and Son Limited and Vodenicar Family Pharmacy Inc. are the finalists in the Large Business category.
The Young Entrepreneur of the year will be awarded to one of the following Kate Higgison & Brandon Kennedy of The Nook Creperie Inc., Reuben Stone of Valley Bio Ltd or Kylah Dobson & Zack Loeks of The Rainbow Heritage Garden. A new category this year is the Feature Award which is focused on the environmental theme for this year. Finalists for the 2009 Feature Award – Environmental are Best Western Pembroke Inn & Conference Centre, Connaught Nursery and The Rainbow Heritage Garden.
The awards gala will also feature a special presentation to Joe Kowlaski who is being recognized in the Lifetime Business Achievement category. Kowalski owner of Wilderness Tours has taken the lead in making the OttawaValley a world famous destination for rafters and kayakers and in the course has created thousands of jobs over the years. Through hard work and careful business planning along with his brother and partner Joanne Clifford, Wilderness Tours has grown to become the premier outdoor adventure enterprise.
The Awards Gala includes a great meal which is being catered by Ullrich’s, silent auction, the presentation of the awards followed by a dance with music by Chris Cooper DJ Services. The awards presentation will be taped by TV Cogeco and re-broadcast at a later date on the community television station throughout RenfrewCounty. This year’s Awards Gala is being sponsored by Platinum Sponsor, AlgonquinCollege. Tickets are now on sale through the Chamber office and are $60/person.
