Upper Ottawa Valley Chamber of Commerce Awards Gala
Tip Sheet

Hints and ideas for writing nominations
By: Chris Hinsperger and Gail Richardson

Preamble: through the work of the Chamber the Awards Gala has become one of the premier celebrations of success for organizations and businesses in the OttawaValley. While it is always an honor to be nominated for an award, and an even greater thrill to be chosen as the recipient of the award there is nothing like the quiet celebration that takes place in one’s heart when a friend or business colleague is being honored and you know that you were the one responsible for that nomination.

Why write a nomination?

  1. By writing a nomination you develop a relationship with the business or enhance an existing relationship.
  2. It just feels good.
  3. It raises your status in your business communities.
  4. It helps develop your writing skills.
  5. You could win a pair of Ottawa Senators tickets.
  6. You personally benefit from all that you learn, from & about your nominee, and their contributions to the economy and the community.
  7. It is interesting and fun.

Hints and Strategies

  1. Write your nomination paying strict attention to the criteria.
  2. Be creative in your description; use more words rather than less.
  3.  Include photographs.
  4. Attach newspaper clippings.
  5. Ask for testimonials from customers or clients and include them in the nomination package.
  6. Interview the nominee. While it is nice to surprise someone with a nomination it is usually the owner or director of a business or organization that is the best spokesperson and you are the messenger. One might go so far as to interview the person using a tape recorder or video camera and then write the nomination from that.
